Modular Java: Enterprise OSGi with SpringSource dm Server

Many modern application servers claim to be based on OSGi
or are transitioning to OSGi. Among them, SpringSource
dm Server (“dm Server”) stands out as the only application
server that was built from the ground up with OSGi in mind.
What's more, the modularity afforded by OSGi is not only
an internal design facet, but is also extended to the
applications deployed on dm Server.

Unlike traditional application servers that carried a
bulk of Java EE functionality (whether you needed it or
not), dm Server supports the notion of “personalities”,
by which you can build an application server ala carte
to meet the needs of your applications.

As for the applications deployed in dm Server, they can
employ as little or as much modularity as they need. Even
though traditional monolithic WAR files can be deployed,
dm Server's OSGi underpinnings make it possible to deploy
applications through finer-grained modules that can be
maintained and updated independent of each other.

As we conclude the trilogy of OSGi sessions, we'll look at
how dm Server makes enterprise-class OSGi a reality.
