Windows and .NET on Mac - No Fluff Just Stuff

Windows and .NET on Mac

Posted by: Venkat Subramaniam on January 6, 2007

This week I'm offering an "Advances in .NET" course for a client in Oklahoma.
Last week I purchased a new MacBook Pro. So, I gathered up enough courage to
run the course on the new box. Windows runs quite well on Parallels (that's an
understatement-it's darn good and fast).

When I started the class, during introduction, one of the attendees said "I'm jealous
of your MacBook Pro." At the end of the first day, a few Mac fans gathered around to
comment on the day's experience with .NET/Windows/Parallels on Mac.

During the class, for most part I almost forgot I was using a Mac (once you get stated,
the .NET passion takes over).

I love QuickSilver, I enjoy using TextMate, I think Desktop Manager is cool. So far,
I've updated the version of Ruby on the box, put a few of my routine scripts to work,
installed Subversion, plus a few other things I stumbled upon.

And I am also spending quite some time on the terminal (I used to be a Unix administrator
a long time ago and I think nothing [except maybe QuickSilver] can be as fast or fulfilling
as being on the command line). One of the first things I did on my Mac is to set up crontabs
for some tasks to run automatically [I have not had time to play with the Automator yet].
The usual aliases I use on Unix are in place as well.

I will continue to be on multiple platforms including Windows. So, the ability to run windows
on Mac is one of they key features that cleared way for me to move ahead to the Mac.

And, now how does it feel to run windows and .NET on the Mac - hum, it's kind of like drinking
Coke out of a Pepsi bottle?! May be not that extreme :)
