Modular Java - No Fluff Just Stuff

Modular Java

Posted by: Craig Walls on February 20, 2009

As some of you have noted, it has been a long time since I've blogged anything here. And even the last few blog entries have been sparse on content. This has prompted some of you to go so far as to e-mail me to see if I'm okay. Well...although this blog entry won't be all too heavy in content, I hope that it will answer at least a few of your questions pertaining to my whereabouts.

For the past several months, I've been spending most of my free time working in a new writing project and just haven't had much time to spend blogging. But today, I'm surfacing ever-so-briefly to let you know that my writing project is nearing completion and that as of a few days ago, Modular Java: Creating Flexible Applications with OSGi and Spring has been officially made public.

I'm excited about this book for a number of reasons:

  • I got to work with a new publisher. There's nothing wrong with Manning, they're great and I expect to work with them again soon. I just have a great deal of respect for Pragmatic Bookshelf and wanted to see what it's like working with another publisher.
  • I got a chance to write a book that truly walks the reader step by step through a given problem. I've tried to do this on my other writing projects and have had some success. But this time, my goal was to make the reader feel as if they were pair-programming with me through the book's project and I tried hard not to get too distracted by side topics.
  • I'm excited about OSGi and Spring-DM and their ability to bring true modularity to the Java platform.

The book is not available for purchase yet, but it should be soon. In the meantime, take the opportunity to find Modular Java on Facebook and sign up as a fan. As my time frees up from the book project, I intend to push some OSGi and Spring-DM related content to that page for you to enjoy.

FYI, I've also setup a similar page for Spring in Action on Facebook. Please become a fan of SiA there, too.
