Rod's keynote is underway. Aside from some horrible sound system problems, there's not much groundbreaking yet. It's a fascinating keynote, no doubt. But so far no major news.
One interesting bit in the keynote is the notion that application servers as we have known them are a dying breed. Big monolithic application platforms that must include the full gamut of JEE specs are undesirable as they (1) do more than most applications need and (2) move monolithically too slow to meet the challenges presented in application development. Rod says that the future of enterprise development involves a la carte app servers where we can plug in the parts we need (and at the versions we need them) and leave out the rest.
As he said that, I was thinking OSGi...then his next slide mentioned OSGi explicitly. Hmmmm...
Very interesting, but not new...Rod blogged about this a few months back. Now he's speaking about how Spring fits into the enterprise platform vision. I'll stop blogging and see what he says.
