So, who uses Griffon afterall?

Posted by: Andres Almiray on February 23, 2011

That's the question that inevitably surfaces during Q&A in every single talk I've given on Griffon. While it's true that Java desktop application development does not receive as much press as its web or mobile counterparts it still plays a key role in IT, it is not dead despite how many times people claim it is. The following are a few examples of applications written in Griffon in the last 12 months

Tellurium Works

Tellurium works is a script runner for the Tellurium Automated Testing Framework. This application is capable of running scripts that were created with the Tellurium IDE.

JNDI Warrior

A Swing based client application built using Groovy+Griffon framework, which allows you to browse and operate on a given JNDI directory. Useful for debugging or environment troubleshooting when working with Java EE application servers. This application is built and maintained by Nick Zhu, author of the Griffon Validation plugin.

Jenkins Assembler

Previously known as hudson-assembler, this application generates a Jenkins WAR file with all the plugins you configure via its GUI.

4Shared Desktop

This is the first commercial grade, customer facing application that I'm aware of. It is a desktop client for the 4shared file sharing network.

RGOSWClient

A client application for the OneSocialWeb. The client currently supports Inbox, display the Activities of other users, follow / Unfollow and the public posting of messages.

JCRManager

JCRManager is a rich GUI to administrate JCRs. You'll find drag & drop support among its features.

Lastly, but not least, there is a pair of uses cases for building internal applications with Griffon. Sebastian Blanc discussed one of them in good detail at this Java Ranch thread; the application is basically a Flex project generator. He recently presented both uses cases at the Grails eXchange 2010. The fine folks at SkillMatters posted a videocast a mere hours after recording (thanks Wendy!).

If you're aware of more Griffon applications available in the wild then please drop us a note at the Griffon mailing list or send us a message to @theaviary.

Keep on Groovying!
