Report from Silicon Valley Code Camp - No Fluff Just Stuff

Report from Silicon Valley Code Camp

Posted by: Andres Almiray on October 29, 2007

Silicon Valley Code Camp 2007 took place last weekend. It was a great event, hats off to Peter and his crew for organizing the schedule and the venue, to the sponsors for providing the space, food and goodies; and special thanks to all volunteers, without you it would have not been possible, thank you!

My talk turned out to have a couple of surprises, for starters 9 people showed up (3 confirmed) so that was good! of all 9 none of them had previous experience with Groovy, so my quick intro to the language (5 mins) took more time (~30 mins) leaving less time to the actual topic (GraphicsBuilder), but it was great! the audience just kept pounding me with questions about the language (what it can do), on the compiler, even generated byte code size. SwingBuilder/GrahicsBuilder also resonated on them, thanks to the builder's nature, it really is that simple to create UIs with Groovy even without proper tool support (a designer, also another question asked by the audience). In the end I think the presentation had a positive feedback on the attendees which puts that as a job well done in my book. The slides and code examples are available at the session's wiki (Paul if you read this, I took the liberty of using two slides from one of your presentations).

On the other sessions of the event, I'm sad to say I couldn't be there as much time that I loved to because during that weekend I had to move out from my previous apartment to the new one (the movers came to day with all my stuff from Mexico!), but next time I'll be there! On a more personal note I got the chance to meet Douglas Crockford and thank him personally for letting me fiddle with his code and get Json-lib starting.

Keep on Groovying!
