About this Presentation

Rich Internet Applications range from simple to ambitious. Curl is designed so it can handle even industrial-strength RIA development.

AJAX has taught us the value of Rich Internet Applications (RIA). Cleverly used, JavaScript has enabled impressive advances in mapping, e-mail clients, stock charting, shopping carts, and similar applications. These are great improvements, but these applications are pretty simple compared with a typical enterprise or desktop application. The next step in application evolution puts serious pressure on weak points of the JavaScript model, such as run-time performance and robustness for serious software engineering. Curl is an RIA framework (originated at MIT) that transcends these limitations and complements JavaScript as Web-based enterprise applications take the next steps forward.

Bert Halstead

Chief Architect at Curl, Inc.

Bert Halstead is the chief architect at Curl, Inc., where he focuses on the design and implementation of the Curl platform for rich Internet applications. Applications using this platform can run in a browser and be as interactive and usable as any desktop application.

Before working at Curl, Bert was at Digital Equipment Corporation's Cambridge Research Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focusing on tools to help programmers develop parallel programs. Before that, he served as a member of the MIT computer science faculty.

Bert received bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees from MIT.
