About this Presentation

The concept of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editing is good: you can see what you're doing as you do it. So how come most WYSIWYG editors make you want to scream “give me back my textarea!“? This talk will show where WYSIWYG succeeds and fails, explain how browser-based WYSIWYG editing works, demonstrate why WYSIWYG needs Ajax to provide a great editing experience, and teach you how to use the Dojo editor widget to easily add WYSIWYG editing to your applications.

In presenting this talk Abe will draw on his experience writing and extending WYSIWYG editors over the past two years at JotSpot. He'll tell you what you need to know to use WYSIWYG successfully in your applications, including:

  • WYSIWYG in theory
  • Common problems in web WYSIWYG editors
  • Best practices for a great user experience
  • Implementing browser WYSIWYG using Javascript
  • Technical issues in IE, Firefox, and Safari
  • Ajax and WYSIWYG editing
  • Using the Dojo editor widget
