Roland was the Chief Architect of large-scale messaging subsystems at Openwave, Onebox and Portola Communications, which developed what became the Netscape Mail Server. Prior to co-founding Zimbra, Roland was Chief Architect with the Messaging Products Group at Openwave Systems where he built the large-scale UM system that serviced 4 million consumer UM mailboxes containing over 2500 voice ports. Roland joined Openwave as part of the acquisition of Onebox where he was a founding engineer and senior architect. Previously, Roland was employed at Sun Microsystems' SunSoft and JavaSoft divisions. At JavaSoft he was technical lead for the Security group, responsible for designing and implementing key features of the Java 2 security model. Roland has worked for Stanford University in architecture and development roles, focusing on infrastructure security. Roland earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from Oakland University in Michigan.
